Jim: Hey, grab the brown paper bags and prepare to hyperventilate with excitement, because the Winter Olympics are finally here! Okay, I hadn’t realized four years had gone by since the last ones, either. And I couldn’t tell you the name of a half dozen athletes in them. And I don’t really care about any of the sports played in them. And the last time I really enjoyed watching the Winter, a.k.a., Smaller and Less Important Olympics was 1994, when David Letterman sent his mom as a correspondent and she hated to leave the hotel because it was so cold in Lillehammer. But hey - it’s an excuse for spandex and old-fashioned nationalism, so I’m on board!
Actually, the Mrs. is a big fan of figure skating, though not in years where Harding hires goons to take out competitors. I watch as well, rooting to see them fall. Oh, how I love when they take a tumble on the ice. And this year there’s particular drama, as my longtime favorite Michelle Kwan will be aiming to continue her streak of quadrennial chokes and take second place again, losing to some previously-unknown ice pixie half her age. Come on, Michelle! Go for the silver!
…So talented, so graceful, so smooth and perfect…. all until the final medal round, and then, AAACK AAAACK AAAACCKKK! Choke.
Cam: I confess to having a bit of a crush on Tanya Harding (it’s the whole “bad girl” thing), until I actually met her. She came to the radio station to promote one of her boxing matches a few years ago. Scary chick. S-c-a-a-a-r-r-r-y chick. I’m surprised she hasn’t ended up on a VH-1 reality show yet.
In the meantime, I’d like to announce that I’ll be trying out for the 2010 U.S. Biathlon Team. Apparently only 15 people tried to get on the five person team, so I figure my odds are pretty good. I just need to learn how to ski.
