The folks over at RedState and elsewhere are discussing the Senate’s consideration today of a bill that would establish a race based government in Hawaii. It would also, apparently, set the stage for some Hawaiians to secede from the Union. I know. I know. It sounds crazy. But here it is from the lips of Sen. Akaka from Hawaii, who is sponsoring the bill:
“The governing entity will make a decision as to what happens to, uh, to independence or returning to the monarchy.”
(Eye roll). This is such a stupid bill, it’s shocking that it’s even getting serious consideration. But not only is the Senate taking a careful look at the bill, it could actually pass.
Time to get on the phone. Senators Voinovich and Brownback seem to be top targets.
UPDATE: The Senate defeated the bill today when supporters couldn’t get 60 votes for cloture. A win, of sorts, for the good guys. But what does it say when a majority of Senators voted in favor? Yeesh.

So if they secede from the Union are they going to want to stay on the teet of the USA for major support or are they going to be totally self sufficient? They shouldn’t be able to have it both ways. IMHO

Re: “Staying on the teet of the USA,” probably easier to get more money with fewer strings if you are a foreign, sovereign state than a member of The United.
