I find myself agreeing with an item on the Huffington Post. Allen is behind. Burns is likely behind — though the counting situation in Montana is less clear. But assuming the count is accurate, Webb and Tester have won. Senators Allen and Burns are due their recounts. They should get them. But hopefully both will avoid nasty and contentious legal battles. Let’s take our lesson from Al Gore in 2000 — and do the opposite. Let’s behave like adults, learn our lessons from our defeats, and come back stronger. Let’s not prolong the agony by behaving like sore losers.
UPDATE: According to CNN, last year’s recount in the Virginia Attorney General’s race changed the final tally by 27 votes. Webb is currently ahead by more the 7,000. It looks like the Allen folks are focused on letting the registrars finish their canvass — which is essentially just an audit and correction of the initial returns. Assuming that doesn’t narrow the gap substantially, I hope the Senator will congratulate his successor.
