To be sure, Mr. Lott demonstrated a thorough knowledge of Senate rules during his prior service as whip and leader, but he also demonstrated no ability to stand up to the Democrats or hold his conference together in tough votes. Then there was the whole thing where he got drummed out of office for idiotic comments at Strom Thurmond’s birthday party.
