On Tap Award: Best Government Dollar Spent

If yesterday’s category had me flummoxed, then today’s has me positively confounded. After all, isn’t “best government dollar spent” an oxymoron?

Well, no. Perhaps not.

The government spends money on lots of useful things: fielding an army and navy, building and maintaining roads, and blasting men and women into space, to name but a few.

In the end, though, I had to go with the big, obvious choice.

The best government dollars spent this year — paying the salaries of the men and women serving our nation in the armed forces.

Many are deployed overseas away from their families and their homes. Many are risking their lives and safety to defend our freedom.

They deserve every penny we pay them, and then some.

Jim: Ah, Marshall, this could be the winner in every year. But this year I have a variation…

The Best U.S. Government Dollar Spent for 2007 was our aid to Israel - military, intelligence, and foreign aid - that permitted them to make that airstrike on that mysterious Syrian military site. Rumors continue to circulate about just what was on that site, and the reaction is even weirder – a quiet objection from the Syrians and barely a peep out of the Arab world. Nuclear plant? Weapon assembly site? Imported nuclear parts from North Korea? Whatever was there, it seems we’re probably all safer because it’s now shrapnel.

Cam: Easy. Best government dollar spent was the money spent on dinner for the manager and third baseman of the Boston Red Sox. Okay, technically this won’t happen until , but hey, I’m sure the White House chef has already spent some time figuring out what to serve.

By the way, if any readers of this blog want to get in good with me… just find a way to get me an invitation to this dinner. Thanks.
