What’s the one thing I should do before leaving D.C. for the last time?

Yesterday, the Post ran a column of sorts from a guy name Chris Richard, who had lived in D.C. his whole life, but recently moved to New York. It was his list of things that he had to do one last time before leaving his hometown behind. The concept of the story hit home for me as I am about to move to another great capital city in a couple of weeks after 11 years in Washington. But Richard’s list for the Post was, I thought, pretty lame.

So, I’m crowdsourcing a list of my own.

What’s the one thing I should do in D.C. and its environs before leaving for London?

Jim: Tough call, and ironic, since I faced the same decision a few years ago. Right around the same time of year. Spring and fall in DC are strikingly nice, but February is pretty blah…

I would say Fado’s in Chinatown, but you actually won’t lack for pubs in your new home… I’ll bet southern barbeque is hard to find in London, so I’d hit Old Glory one more time to devour all things pork… I want to hit Palace of Wonders again, for its surreality… Mrs. Campaignspot and I hit Jaleo Sunday night and enjoyed it a great deal, but again, finding good Spanish food might not be too tough in London; if all else fails, it’s a short flight away.

Cam: I suppose “unpacking” isn’t an option? Let’s see… you made it to the Mardi Gras party, so that’s taken care of. Good bar-b-que IS going to be hard to find, so definitely eat some before you go. I’m guessing good Tex-Mex is also going to be hard to find, but then again, I haven’t found good Tex-Mex here to begin with.

How about one last night at Union Street with Jim and me since I won’t be able to make your happy hour tonight? :)

The Air and Space Museum and the Smithsonian. Especially the first one though.

    Couple things:

    - Ben’s Chili Bowl. No, really. The half-smoke is an artisan production no other city handles.
    - Make the drive around the Capitol, then up to the Jefferson and Lincoln, well after dark. The way they’re lit up….it’s special.
    - I’m also a fan of a baseball game at Camden Yards
    - Maybe a trip down to the Air & Space one last time?
    - Spy Museum.

Go read — REALLY read — the inscriptions at the Lincoln Memorial, then take about 20 minutes on a warm spring day to sit on the steps and just stare out at the Mall. It’ll remind you of how awesome you thought the place was when you first arrived — and, on balance, how great it still is today.

Oh boy, moving is fun. I understand where you’re coming from since I recently composed my own list of stuff Keith and I have to do before I move to Philly and we probably never take the time to come back.

Mount Vernon, Montpelier, Monticello, Gunston Hall, Ash Lawn-Highland, Old Post Office, Spy Museum, Holocaust Museum, Cryptologic Museum, Fort Washington, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Main Treasury Building, Air & Space at Dulles, Archives

I’m sure there’s more. We’ve done quite a bit on the list already, but we’ll likely go back and do them one last time.

I would visit the Lincoln, Vietnam and Korean Memorials at night. I would go visit John Boswell at the “Off the Record” bar at the Hay Adams. I would probably go have a steak at the 19th Street Palm Restaurant, just to look at the drawings on the wall. I would go visit the Round Robin bar, walking through the lobby of the Willard where the term “lobbyist” was coined. And I’d check out Eastern Market one last time.

    Marshall,

I’m no DC expert, but wanted to stop and wish you well in London. I hope this is a good career-builder for you and/or Mrs. Manson.
