The Dem Race Won’t End Today
My sense is that Obama has done himself enough damage over the last few days to slow or stop the momentum he had going in Ohio and Texas. Still, I think he prevails in Texas while Clinton squeaks out a narrow win in Ohio. I have no idea what will happen in Vermont and Rhode Island, but it seems safe to predict that Obama will come out ahead on the delegate count for the day.
Nevertheless, Senator Clinton seems determined to continue. Mark Halperin’s list of reasons why seems especially on the money:
1. She thinks she would be a better president than Obama.
2. She thinks she would be a stronger candidate against McCain than Obama.
3. She feels an obligation to her supporters to keep fighting.
4. She thinks she can win Pennsylvania.
5. She thinks she is finally gaining traction on the “national security experience” argument.
6. She thinks the one-on-one debate has only just begun, along with the heightened scrutiny of Obama.
7. She is finally raising enough money to fight the fight with paid TV ads.
8. She knows the Rezko trial is getting started.
9. She knows Obama is still well short of winning a majority of the delegates.
10. Clintons don’t quit–and she really, really, really wants to win.
I would add one more. If Clinton can prevail in a credentials fight and rewrite the rules to seat Florida and Michigan, the race suddenly looks painfully close. (Ambinder adds some good thoughts as well.)
So barring an Obama blow-out today, it looks like we’re on to Pennsylvania and maybe even Denver.
