Getting It Backwards

Brendan Loy says something I almost agree with.

Our political class is totally failing us, almost as much as we’re failing ourselves.

Like I said, I almost agree with it. I just think he has it backwards. We’re totally failing ourselves, almost as much as our political class is failing us.

Look, as much as we pretend otherwise, we still have government of, for, and by The People. That means that no matter who’s in charge, no matter who the candidates are, no matter how great things are or how terrible things are… the buck stops with Us.

We’ve seen blame directed at politicians, Wall Street, Republicans, Democrats, homeowners, bankers, and on and on. And the funny thing is, everyone’s right. There’s enough blame to go around. All of us, We the People, have created this mess. This isn’t a left/right problem… this is a societal problem. And we as a society seem oddly preoccupied with looking around in desperation to find a scapegoat. Sorry, but that won’t help.

We are no longer responsible for our government. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people” isn’t realitic anymore, because once our elected representatives gain power, they no longer represent us. They only represent themselves.

    *Is this now our culture?*

    Lengthy, but worth it.
